This week’s Barna Minute looks at whether or not senior adults believe they should pass on a spiritual legacy.
In Barna’s report, Aging Well, older adults want to see the next generation taught values, morals and ethics, but don’t necessarily see themselves as playing a role in helping younger generations recognize and live out these ideals—unless they are relatives. Considering who has a responsibility to pass their faith on to others, Christian seniors mostly feel this falls on parents passing their faith to their children (51% strongly agree) and grandparents passing their faith to their grandchildren (40% strongly agree).
Just under two in five Christian adults ages 55+ (37%) strongly agree that adults in a community have a responsibility to pass along their faith to the young people in their community. One-third of Christian adults 55+ (34%) strongly agree “I have a responsibility to pass my religious faith on to people younger than me.” In addition, just 25 percent of older adult Christians strongly agree “It is my responsibility to disciple people younger than me in their faith.”
